Overview

The habituated proximity to violence in post-apartheid South Africa has led to a desire for protection from crime in the gated community. I am interested in this psychological landscape, informed by my experience having grown up there. I returned in May 2018 to research the impact of violence on society since the 1994 elections. From an emigrant’s objective perspective, and a longing to live there again, I noticed attitudes reflected in interviews and conversations about every day life, art, politics, commitment to staying or leaving, and the way in which we personally examine our place in what I feels like a socio-political ruin.
